This is a demo of the problem with using table backgrounds in netscape. Essentialy identical tables one with the problem, on the left, and one with the fix which is:
Use .fix { background-image: url(blank.gif) } and <TD class="fix"> in all the cells to be protected.  This is not something that is very well known or documented
