It's true they're given far less attention by search engines than used to be the case. But meta tags give useful clues to a search engine as to what the page is about. Like many useful tools, meta tags were destroyed by Search Engine "Spammers" because, being invisible, it's easy to use tags that have no relation to what's actually on the page. But if your visible text relates to the meta tags, with identifiable commonality between them, then the spider has valuable guidance on which keywords to concentrate on.
